James: Welcome to Chinese Studio once again on CRI – wo shi James. 
YJ: And wo shi Yajie.  This week we mainly focused on some dating phrases. 
James: That’s right, so let’s  look back to the week to see what we've learned

Sentences in the Week
You look very pretty. 你真漂亮!(ni3 zhen1 piao4liang!) Would you like to dance? 能跳支舞吗?(neng2 tiao4 zhi1 wu3 ma?) What would you like to drink? 想喝点什么?(xiang3 he1 dian3 shen2me) Would you like to go for dinner sometime? 有空一起吃饭吧。(you3kongr4 yi4qi3 chi1 fan4 ba4) All in today’s Chinese Studio.

YJ: James, what would you say to beautiful girls you met.
J: Well I would first call them very pretty.
YJ: Do you still remember how to say that in Chinese?
J: I forgot.
YJ: .It’s okay. Let’s review the sentence together.  You can say 你真漂亮!(ni3 zhen1 piao4liang!) 
J: 你真漂亮!(ni3 zhen1 piao4liang!)
YJ: 你 (ni3), means you. 
J:你 (ni3)
YJ: 真 (zhen1) means very. 
J:真 (zhen1) 
YJ:  漂亮 (piao4liang), pretty. 
J: 漂亮 (piao4liang)
YJ: So the whole sentence reads like this:  你真漂亮!(ni3 zhen1 piao4liang!) 
J: 你真漂亮!(ni3 zhen1 piao4liang!) You look very pretty! 
YJ: And then girls prefer to say 谢谢(xie4xie4) after hearing the compliments.
J: 谢谢!(xie4xie4)Got it.

Conversation 1:

James: Yajie, I also forgot how to invite a girl to dance in Chinese. Could you please tell me again?  
YJ: Sure. You can say “能跳支舞吗?(neng2 tiao4 zhi1 wu3 ma?)” 
James: 能跳支舞吗?(neng2 tiao4 zhi1 wu3 ma?) 
YJ: 能 (neng2), can or could. 
James: 能 (neng2)
YJ: 跳支舞(tiao4 zhi1 wu3), to have a dance with me. 
James: 跳支舞(tiao4 zhi1 wu3). 
YJ: 能跳支舞吗?(neng2 tiao4 zhi1 wu3 ma?)
James: 能跳支舞吗?(neng2 tiao4 zhi1 wu3 ma?) Would you like to have a dance with me?
YJ: And if you want to buy her a drink, you can say想喝点什么?(xiang3 he1 dian3 shen2me?) 
James: 想喝点什么?(xiang3 he1 dian3 shen2me?) What would you like to drink?
YJ: 想 (xiang3), want to. 
James: 想 (xiang3)
YJ: 喝 (he1), to drink, the first tone. 
James: 喝 (he1)
YJ: 点 (dian3), a little. 
James: 点 (dian3)
YJ: 什么 (shen2me), what?
James: 什么 (shen2me) 
YJ: 想喝点什么?(xiang3 he1 dian3 shen2me?)
James: 想喝点什么?(xiang3 he1 dian3 shen2me?) What would you like to drink?

Conversation 2:

James: Well, I do remember“有空一起吃饭吧?(you3kongr4 yi4qi3 chi1 fan4 ba? )” which means “Would you like to go for dinner sometime?” 
YJ: That’s right. 有空儿(you3kongr4), as we mentioned before, it means to be free, or to have some time.
James: 有空儿(you3kongr4).
YJ: 一起 (yi4qi3), together. 
James: 一起 (yi4qi3).
YJ: 吃饭 (chi1 dun4 fan4), to have a meal. 
James: 吃饭 (chi1 dun4 fan4)
YJ: 有空儿一起吃饭吧?(you3kongr4 yi4qi3 chi1 fan4ba?) Would you like to go for dinner sometime?
James: 有空儿一起吃饭吧?(you3kongr4 yi4qi3 chi1 fan4ba?)
